The village first appeared in October 1874 as "Hampshire Center," platted by A.J. Willing and C.A. Fasseth, but the settlement relocated in 1876 to sit directly along the Chicago-Pacific Railroad line and incorporated that October by a 73–2 vote, with Samuel Rowell as its first village president — Hampshire Township itself had already been organized back in 1845.
